In 2013 the world as we know it was completely wiped out by an apocalyptic event which destroyed almost all of mankind and made the earth's surface poisonous for sustaining life. However, a small group of survivors managed to hide out in the depths of Moscow's underground system. Metro 2033 takes place in the year 2033 and your name is Artyom. Artyom was born just before the great apocalyptic fire, but has been raised inderground. Fate forces you to leave the confines of the underground for the first time and venture out into the wilderness, to warn whatever remanants of mankind there are of another impending disaster.
