Topic: D&D

For the ignorant ones in the crowd, that means Dungeons and Dragons. And no, not the electronic version. I'm talking about the old pens, pencils, paper, and graphing paper type of DD.

Like every single other person in the entire world, i've known about this game since the day i was conceived. And, like every single other person in this world, i was brought up hearing that, for some reason, it was an evil game. Several months ago, i found out a friend of mine played it, so i started asking about it, and it sounded very interesting. So, that night, i went home and did some curiosity searching about it, and i was intrigued.

So, I gave him a call and told him i wanted to try this out. So, about a week ago i went to his place and we tried it out. It took about an 3 hours to finally get started. No one had pre-made characters so we were all starting from scratch. Thankfully we had a guy who'd been playing DD for 20 years, so he was pretty much our DD Wikipedia. Anyway, so we finally got started, and at first it was kind awkward.

After a while though, i started to get into it, and it was really interesting. Unlike MMORPG's where there's a story line and set speech options, you do what you wana do in DD. Theres an immeasurable amount of freedom in it. Unfortunately we didn't get to play for a long time, because we started at noon and didn't get into it untill about 3. We had to break it up at about 8-9 so only had about 5 hours to kill. Which, seems like a lot, but also feels so short, especially when its time to end it.

I came to the conclusion, that whomever called this game Satanic, is a complete dumb ass. I saw nothing more than an MMO or any other computer game, using dice instead of a computerized randomization program. So Yahtzee is ok. And writing fantasy novels is ok, but when the 2 are combined together... SATAN WILL CONSUME YOUR SOUL!!!!

Anyway, has anybody else tried this, if so when, do you still play it? how often? How big is your group?

For those of you who havent tried it but are interested. It's really easy to understand. It's confusing at first, but if your a fast learner then it only takes a few game sessions and you'll really get into it. Get past the social pre-determined idea's of it being "Nerdy" or "Satanic" and give it a go. However there are 2 requirements to play this game

Patience
Imagination

You need a large amount of both of these, if your lacking even one, you wont enjoy it.

I thought you were talking about Drugs and Disease (as in STD)... lol...

*rolls eyes* anywho...

yeah, a former neighbor of mine had a son who played D&D and became a completely different person... she was one of those who swear it is satanic...

I disagree, as all it is is just a game with complete imagination and strategy. Unfortunately, I do not have the time to play a campaign like such, much like with any MMORPGs that require a lot of time to make it really fun. I have patience and imagination (my wife can tell you about my imagination even being at my age), but the 3rd part of this game is time, which is why a majority of people that I've seen play this are usually single (I've seen just as many girls play it as guys at the local card shop, so it's gender neutral) or have a SO that plays with them. Again, there are always exceptions to the rules, but from my viewpoint this is what I see.

This is a game I actually would encourage people to play even though I've never played it myself. It is a good game to develop imagination, become more social, meet new people, and have an inexpensive hobby that can keep you off the streets. Some "religious zealots" just need to actually see the game and get over themselves before they dare call anything Satanic. I've been playing Yu-gi-oh for a few years now and my father calls it witchcraft... lol... crazy what these zealots do.

Actually, i was going to say it also required time, but then i kinda realized otherwise. Mose of the game can be done alone as kind of a side note. Your talking to work, you think of something - write it on a small note pad you have with you. Thats the sort of thing we do. We all run fairly busy lives, but set aside 1 day a week to meet up. Everything else is on our own as little side notes.

Although the hard part would be finding people at your age and location. Although, i'm sure there are forums you could find if your really interested in it though.
