Product Description & Features

Onimusha 3 is a third person action adventure game set in ancient feudal Japan and modern day Paris. Akechi Samanosuke makes a breathtaking return to the Onimusha universe as he takes his place alongside his partner through time French Cop, Jacques Blanc. Once again the part of Samanosuke is played by famed Japanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro with the exciting news that his co star is to be played by Gallic action hero Jean Reno. Nobunaga the vicious warlord behind the Genma hoards of the first two titles is back and more powerful than ever with a host of demonic creatures bent on the destruction of all things honourable and pure at his command. The game is a graphical masterpiece with scenery that has to be seen to be believed and in a bold step forwards, environments are now fully 3D without any loss of the detail attained in the previous pre rendered games. This combined with an improved control mechanism and finely tuned gameplay makes Onimusha 3 one of the smoothest most immersive video game experiences on Playstation 2.

Who has designed the game?

Keiji Inafune, the mind behind the first two titles in the Onimusha series returns with one of the most aesthetically beautiful games ever created. With Playstation 2 hardware now fully into the show casing stage of its development life cycle, the Osaka based development team has been able to take the overall graphical style of Onimusha 3 to the next level. The control system has been overhauled to allow players to control their hero with the left analogue stick for the first time. This new development allows for smoother and quicker action when exploring the many locations within the game. Battles are as intense as ever with more weapons and magic at the players disposal than ever before. Inafune san has blended an exhilarating mix of classic puzzle game-play with an epic cinematic feel to create one of the most atmospherically absorbing titles ever to grace a games console.

Inafune san's goal was to make an adventure that would appeal to Western gamers as much as it would to Japanese. The move to modern day France and the introduction of Jean Reno as a central character can be seen as a direct result of this. The team hope that with the inclusion of familiar territory and landmarks that the Onimusha universe will gain an even wider fan base among western gamers.

What is the basic idea of the game?

After the beginning credits of the game which are an epic adventure in themselves, Samanosuke finds himself mysteriously transported through time to modern day Paris where he meets the understandably startled French Cop, Jacques Blanc. Blanc has just had the unpleasant duty of fighting off a hoard of demon samurai and seconds later he has even more to worry about as he himself is transported back through time to ancient Japan. Now stuck in the past, Jacques must use his whip and pistol to fight through the hoards of Genma monsters that lie in his path.

Luckily Jacques finds himself with a companion in the distant past, a magical fairy-like creature called Ako who possesses excellent translation skills. Not only does she enable Jacques to speak and understand 16th century Japanese but she is also able to travel back and forth through time which gives our two main heroes the chance to have some form of communication. She can also actively change the way you play the game. Ako has various magic jackets that she can wear. These give her different abilities which in turn can directly affect one of the main characters. If she wears her red coat for example, Jacques or Samanosuke will be able to suck souls quicker, if she wears her yellow jacket and the player stands still for long enough, she has the ability to heal.

Together, though separated by nearly 500 years of history, Jacques and Samanosuke must find out who is responsible for the time distortions, why they are making them happen and to realise their final destiny: The ultimate destruction of Nobunaga Oda and his evil empire.

What sort of game is Onimusha 3?

Onimusha 3 is a masterful blend of survival horror and action adventure with Samanosuke and Jacques enjoying a much freer and more intuitive control system than those featured in the Resident Evil and even the two previous Onimusha games. Although not as athletic as Dante in Devil May Cry, the two main characters employ skilful, slick movements with which they elegantly dispatch the evil creations that confront them. The relentless action is complemented by deeply involving puzzles, some crucial to the exploration of the game, others smaller in scale but equally as demanding.

The in game locations include many real life destinations such as the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower. Each of these awesome buildings has been realistically recreated around a fully interactive 3D game world. The overall effect is visually stunning and adds to the overall cinematic quality of the game-play.

What do the Souls do?

Samanosuke and Jacques have the ability to suck up the souls of the monsters they slay. With each kill the two main characters add more souls to their total enabling them to power up weapons and armour through three levels to ultimately max out their strength. There are several different types of these souls including health, magic and the mysterious purple souls.

Health souls are yellow in colour and vary in size. Magic souls are white, once obtained they increase the magic gauge and eventually allow the two main characters to unleash attacks of immense power. The most common souls which always materialise after an enemy is killed are the red Power up souls. To extract the largest possible soul count, players must time their attacks to perfection. When this happens, players will see a white flash of light and the enemy will be destroyed in a single strike. This is called an 'Issen' manoeuvre.

If an attack is particularly successful, a purple soul will materialise from the defeated creature. This is very large and slow moving which makes it difficult to collect in the heat of battle. Once five of these souls have been collected, Samanosuke or Jacques can change into an Onimusha demon, indestructible with increased power but for a limited time only. They can change as soon as the fifth soul is collected by pressing the R3 button. Timing these transformations can be crucial.

What weapons can you get?

Samanosuke and Jacques can collect many different weapons in the game. Each character has three main weapons they can choose from though these must all be collected first. Samanosuke's weapons are largely blade based and include Twin Swords (Tenso), Long Sword (Kuga) and the Earth Axe (Chiga). Jacques weapons are whip based and include Chain Sword (Enja), Spear Whip (Raisen) and the mighty Ball and Chain (Hyosai). The enhanced attack action incorporates a simple control system allowing players to easily execute devastating new moves. As in Onimusha 2, players can power up their weapons at any time for a one off super powerful hit by holding down R1 on the Playstation 2 controller.

What are the games strongest points?

Onimusha 3 is an action packed saga of epic proportion. From the first moments of the opening movie the player is bombarded with scintillating graphics and a dramatic soundtrack which immediately draws you in to the heart of Onimusha's magical world. The game-play is sublime and the intuitive combat system is a joy to control. The battles escalate to truly titanic proportions with magic and combat taking centre stage. There are many different enemies that lay in wait including some of the biggest and hardest boss characters ever seen.

Cut scenes fuse seamlessly with game-play magnifying the storyline and totally immersing the player. With the inclusion of the two main playable characters, gameplay is given an exciting new dimension. It's like playing two games for the price of one!

Once again Keiji Inafune has created a truly innovative gaming masterpiece. Onimusha 3 will surely be considered one of the most advanced games ever made.
