Help with repairing

I have a repair kit but i'm unable to repair stuff...it always says i failed to get a skill increase even though i eliminated all the sparks...does anyone know a way to fix stuff?

When u are repairing something to go up quicker press 2, and to go down press 9. and when u are by the thing where the spark comes out, you press the nevigation button. that's all.
