What do i need to upgrade before i can do gardening?

Nothing at all. You already have the little patch of garden, just plant and fertilize

You need to upgrade the house once, to bring to garden out, it cost $1000, then you can buy the watering can cost $150, after that you buy the fertilizer and the seeds

You have to upgrade your house first. Its unavailable at the start of the game but it pops up when you have unlocked it.
