Skill Points for Your Horse

How do you get the skill points for your horse up? I've tried a lot of stuff, but it won't go any higher than 1/2 a star and stay like that long enough for me to get to Luc's house.

Keep doing the contests and practice jumping, i have 2 stars filled for skill

I got 2/3 of the stars for skill, 4 full stars for jump, and 5 full stars for care. How do I get my horse to prove himself for his fiancey?
