How do you start the second play-through with all your money

After the credits, the game gives you an option to save. According to what I've read and the general nature of SRW games, saving and then loading this file allows you to replay the game, but with all the kills, upgrades, and money from your first playthrough. Is there a certain process to unlocking this or is this problem caused because I am playing it on an GBA emulator?
