Having trouble with quests

I never figured out how to shake the island either and then the quest finally expired.

I don't remember the quest as I think I did it by accident. I was moving around and the next thing I know, I got a "completed quest" message ... but to collect your gold, you just shake your device. Just shake for a few seconds and see if you get the "collect all" message. Hit OK to collect from all houses and merchants (except the ruby generating ones which require "manual" collection).

To defeat Hannibal, you will likely need ALL your ships ... well at least your more powerful ones. You don't have to use just one ship. Attack Hannibal and do whatever damage you can. Since you have first shot, you will do something. After you lose, hit Hannibal again, and "change ship" ... find the ship you just used and hit 'repair'. Then chose (select) the next ship you want to send against Hannibal. Keep doing this and you should be able to defeat him. I started with the wimpiest and worked my way up ... ended up defeating Hannibal without using Jim's Cruiser or the Emerald Queen. Oh, and remember to upgrade your ships as much as you can and outfit them with the best weapons/armor that you have.
