How do unlock gates?

I got more land with my watchtower but I can't unlock gates.. How do I unlock the gates..

Yeah ther is a few gates I can't unlock still. I have unlocked one cause it came up in a quest. So maybe they can only be opened when a quest comes up for it.

Yes, quests will come up to unlock gates that block access to islands
