Is it possible to breed and get an Emerald dragon without spending gems?

Highly doubtful. They're supposed to be available through the island only, but if someone somehow finds a way to breed, we'll known soon enough.

I've seen a lot of people getting the emerald dragon by breeding lichen and crystal or vice versa. As soon as my cave opens up I'm giving it a go. Good luck!

I tried several times with crystal and lichen before I had the Island without any luck. As soon as the Island was "ready" I gave it another shot, with the same combo, and got the emerald first try!
