Is there any way out other than the way in after killing the birds?

Yes, there is. After you go theough the cave and kill the giant ice monster, you'll get a boulder of gold. You will need to keep going to the left, do a lot of platform jumping with the boulder, and eventually you will make it out. It is a real pain to do.
