You can use Gaara's advice and use rubies to defeat Hannibal ... but it is NOT NECESSARY. But it is much quicker ... You don't have to use just ONE ship to defeat Hannibal. In fact, I didn't even use Captain Jim's Cruiser. All you need to do is attack with any ship ... if you lose ... attack again with another ship. Keep doing this. Hannibal (or any pirate) does not "regenerate" after an attack. Since you get first shot in an encounter, you will be able to give some damage with each attack. I found that the you need at least 200-250 (attack/defense) to be able to do any real damage and be able to take one shot from Hannibal (if it can take one shot, it will get another shot at him before he takes your ship out). If you run out of ships and still have not defeated Hannibal, just repair your ships and have a go at him again. I basically started with my weakest ship and worked my way up until I whittled down Hannibal and defeated him. In fact, NONE of my major ships entered the battle and were sitting there ready to sail for treasure. You can use this "non-regen" aspect to your advantage. You can take out pirates using multiple smaller ships. This can save your most powerful ships from expensive and time consuming repairs. It also allows those ships to continue to sail for and gather treasure.

Good answer, sam. Some additional ideas/thoughts: IMHO, Buying Golden Cannons is a good use of Rubies (30) , they increase a ship's offensive power by 100 each. I have two aboard Capt Richards battleship which gets him up to 555 offense. I also have one on Parker's Pinnacle along with a Giant Cannon (+75) that I got either from a merchant or voyage. Parker is now at 379 offense. The repair costs and time are unchanged with the added equipment, making either of these ships much cheaper to repair than Jim if they do take a hit. Another point: Pirates will stick around in a weakened state while you go off 8 to 10 hours to repair, attacking/visiting players will usually not and will be gone when you finish repairing (ask me how I know!!)
