Same, I've got an old ipod and so can't turn the volume down. IS there an alternative to override this or is that it for us oldies?

I figured it out for iPhone...you have to go into settings and turn OFF the 'change with buttons' setting for your ringer and then turn your volume down. Yikes that was frustrating!

1) Go into your music player.
2) put some head phones in.
3) Turn down volume in music player.
4) Go back to level 40.
5) Remove headphones

I have an old ipod1, and indeed -- recomendation from HAL9000 did help.

HAL9000's advice helped, but you will need to replace the headphones to open the door.
