How do you get the pets to help in combat?

Just click on the star wand at the right and left sides of your main character before the battle page

Exactly what NicEffrien said. And if you want to take them out of combat, click on the pet you want to take out and there you go :)

If you dont already have a pet you can get one by completing a map, going to the store, buying a bizarre bag, going back to that map, clicking it and click capture instead of hunt.
