What does holy water do???

I see that when I get a certain number of badges I can get holy water, which in its description says it brings a pet up one generation. im not sure exactly what that means... any help?

Holy Water increases pet generation by 1 without incurring the -200 level penalty. It will also randomize the levels of your pets properties.
