I think you are talking about daily challenges. you have to stay connected to get the daily challenges. you get a word everyday.

Letters are not 'Envelopes'.. when it says "pick up xx daily letters", You have to do the Daily Challenges.. (the daily words) if that day's - word is "N I C E", you will get 4 letters from that daily challange.. Then you have to wait for next day to pick up more letters, if you need more.

'Letter' means a letter from the alphabet and not a letter as in a written paper in an envelope.
When you do the daily challenges you need to collect letters to compete them. Those letters are 'The Daily Letters'

You just have to be connected to the internet while playing. the letters will show up and by collecting them you finish the daily challenges. As ShakedG rightly pointed out - letters are NOT envelopes! If you're playing the game offline, letters do not show up and you will not be able to complete your daily challenges.. Hope this helps!
