How to level up past 4 or 5?

I've noticed other teams have players who have leveled up to 7 or 8. I can't get mine past level 4 on some 5 on others. It literally says "this player can't level up anymore" or something to that affect. Help?

You have to buy stars in order for them to max out on level ups. they are going to always fail a few attempts without stars to help them.
