Attacking other bases

Other people who are playing can attack me with in a number of seconds but when I try to attack them back it says it takes like 6 hours and I can attack in half the time for about five hundred gems. Is there any way to attack people fast without using a lot of gems

No. they are sending multiple units to attack you and they all get there around the same time.
