More than one barracks
Does it make sense to have more than one barracks? I have 4 I built that I think was suggested by the quests but I do not see a need now as I have been upgrading only one of them? Are the extra ones used when you fight or just to allow you to have more troops? Should I be upgrading all the barracks?

Upgrading all 4 barracks will speed up troop production, the more barracks at high levels the faster your troops build

Then how will you have enough gold to research?

Each additional barracks adds an extra slot to the training queue as well. Usually there is an overabundance of gold in an alliance. Just ask for it if you are short.
