What I did is I planted about 6 mystery seeds at the same time, then waited until they grew up. Then only 2 of them were common plants and the other 4 were rare plants, I attracted 2 new rare fish! :) That's really the only way you can do it, because if u only plant one it will most likely be a common plant. Hope this helped and good luck (:

I used pearls to grow it straight away and that seemed to do it for me :)

If you do the special plant combinations the area that glows blue once done put the seed there usually grows a rare plant

I planted around 10 mystery seeds at 800sd each and none of them turned out to be a rare plant. I always use pearls - one per level and it gives me a rare plant and a rare fish. other times it just doesnt work how much ever i try. I have wasted too many pearls already. I also tried planting around 8 mystery seeds (other than the10 above) in the blue/ violet light that falls and one turned out to be a rare plant - but I already had them. So no new fish.... I dont think there is any strategy to all this. It just happens randomly :) let me know if there is something working

I tried planting the mystery seed in the purple area and thought it was the key as it turned out to be a rare plant. . but then the next few times out didn't work. Coincidence I guess. I have found the blue sparkle thing to be correct. Seedlings that occasionally give off blue sparkles have so far consistently become rare plants. It may takes 30secs of watching them to see it though! I read somewhere that if you move a seedling, that it won't turn into a rare plant. I proved this to be incorrect. I was shifting my dud seedlings off to the side (not sure if that's the right tactic or not), when I noticed one I had moved earlier was sparkling!
