Combining collections before tasks are active
I've searched through old posts from this site about this topic/title. And, I've found conflicting information about whether or not I should combine collections if I don't have an active task on the left side of the puzzle area.
One post (that I really want to believe), suggested that there may have been an update that fixed this issue so you get credit and don't have to re-collect the items if you combine the collection in advance. Is this true? Is it safe to combine in advance? If it matters, I play from an iPhone (yes, I know, it is murder on the eyes).
It is my understanding that some people may want the extra tasks so they can be in the Finder Top 1000, but that isn't important to me. I just don't want to have to find everything again. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Mar

As far as I know, you will still have to find everything again if you combine before you have actually been given the quest by the game. You must find each of the 5 items of a collection in order, too. So even if you have 1 or more of every item in the collection, the game will not give you credit for it. The only exception is that after you find the first 4 items, if you already have the 5th item, you can go ahead and combine at that point and the game will give you credit for both the entire collection and the last item within it.

The tip I was given, and has worked for me is: do not combine the collection unless you can keep at least 5 of each one in your inventory. That way when the task comes up, you accept the task, combine the collection 1 time. Accept the next task, combine the collection 1 time, etc.
As Karen said- it will count the collection as collected when you get that far.

I've actually combined items prior to getting the task and they are correct, you are not credited for it. And oh my goodness Mar, tried it on my iPhone once. Took one look and had a laugh. I definitely give you credit for playing on an iPhone. Must be a real fan of the game!

Yes I agree with you all, if you combine a collection before it appears on the task list, then you will still have to find each item again when they finally do appear. However I have had the whales, legendary sets, party attire, etc bounce straight through my task list - on/ credited/ off again all the way through including the collection! At the time I had already combined 5 sets of each plus I had at least 20 of each item as spares. I have also been notified that there is a collection ready to combine and I haven't received any of the items through the task list so I'm not sure if they will ever appear on the task list eg Exotic fruits. Hope this helps :-)

Here is what I do.
I look to see which collections I have that could be put on the wish list. I then add all 5 items. Your friends, if they're good (love my friends!), will give you the entire collection. Accept them and watch the ENTIRE collection get complete, then combine. Voila, on to next collection.
If the collection is not on the wish list, then complete the first 4 tasks and combine on the fifth.
If one item is super stubbon to find and you're at wits end AND can combine, then you might consider combining which will count the current item you desperately want. You will still have to find the remaining items on your list.
Hope this helps.

KaReN, KRose, and orchidgirl619 -
Thank you for the quick responses. Everyone on this site is so helpful. Even though it isn't what I want to hear, I really appreciate the insight. Now to decide on the best strategy for me going forward :)
PS - orchidgirl619 - I have to admit that I actually bought a pair of readers last weekend to help with Crashed Plane and Mayan Temple. And, they really work well!

KRose is correct. If you have 5 or more of each item in the collection (and enough combining items), you can simply combine the collection 5 times, rather than having to go in search of each item again. BUT this only works if you do the combining after the task has been presented. If you combine before the task/quest has been presented, then you will still get the reward for it (coins, food for energy, anti-anomaly items, etc.), but the game will not recognize it as a completed quest and will make you do it all again later. For quests that require completing collections, which would be most of them, the first task presented will be to obtain the first item in the list for that collection, then the second, and so forth.
Therefore, if you have 5 of each item in a collection, you can wait for the task of collecting the first item to be presented. Since you have enough multiples of each item, you may choose to go ahead and combine, and the game will give you credit for completing the task of getting the first item. Then, after you have combined, it will present the task of finding the second item of that same collection. You now have 4 more of each item, so you combine again and get credit for the second item. Rinse and repeat until you have gotten credit for each item by combining the collection 5 times, with each combination being done AFTER an individual task has already been given to you by the game. Usually, as soon as you get the first item, the second item will appear on the task list on the left side of your screen, and then the third, etc. However, sometimes there is a gap of time in between tasks so you might have to hang tight and not scratch the itch to keep combining until it is the appropriate time. So Sue could use this method if she's got 20 of each item in a collection, despite having already combined that same collection 5 times prior to getting the quest for it.
FYI: The game will show you that pop up box saying you can combine a collection whenever it is that you have all 5 pieces, but don't be fooled into thinking that means it won't give it to you as a quest later if you haven't done that quest yet. Also, I am not entirely sure if I am interpreting Xanthus' post correctly, but I just want to clarify that if you post all items of a collection to your WL in hopes that you can get them quickly that way, that's fine, but only accept the one that you have been tasked. After you get credit for that and the 2nd one is tasked, then accept it from your box of gifts, etc. If you received all 5 items as gifts and accepted them all at the same time, you've just shot yourself in the foot.

KaRen and everyone - Thank you so much for the advice! You really made the options clear and I think it will help future people searching this topic (I'm sure there are others). Since so much of SS game behavior seems to depend on the device used, do any of you think that what you've experienced has to do with whether you're using ipad, iphone, kindle, etc?
Unfortunately, I've been playing the game for a while but just started to really use this site recently. Wish I would have asked sooner as I've combined a lot of collections that I should have held on to for longer.
Thank you - Mar

I know a lot of device-specific problems are going on right now due to the last update, but I really don't think this question has anything to do with any of that. If your game is working properly, regardless of device, then what I said above should be true. Glad I could be of some help, Mar!
Answer from: Argh
I'd say the reason you have read conflicting information on previous threads is because the game changes with each update, and is not necessarily device related. For example, most if what has been described to you hear (aboit combining collections to complete quests) has only been possible since the valentines update, so if you read a thread started before february then you womt see mention of that because it wasnt possible then. I think people forget the mechanics of game play can change over time, updates don't just add pictures.
There are minor differences playing between devices, but as long as people are playing the same update of the game, the majority of infirmation is the same for everyone.

Everyone - Thank you for your responses and assurances about the device specific issues. Your insights are greatly appreciated.
Not to belabor the point, but there is still one thing I'm confused about. And, just in case there is another SS addict out there who isn't thoroughly bored by this topic yet either, I thought I'd post about it. Here goes... On the Skipping Quests page of the Cheats and Hints section of this site and on the FAQs page of another site, there is an indication that it is a good thing to combine collections early. (You can search 'skipping quests' on this site and review the excerpt I'm pasting below).
The reason for my confusion is that I have the impression that at least twice I've received the 6th quest collection pop up (not the 1st - 5th acceptance pop ups) after searching a picture for a collection that I didn't know I was even finding/questing. (This is NOT the 'You have collections pop up', which I have fallen for too). Could these hints possibly be correct and I'm getting credit for the collection that was combined BEFORE any of the related quests were active? I think it happens right after combining a collection that I knew I was collecting. It is like 1 or 2 collection quests (6th one only) just pop up in a row. Or, am I misinterpreting these hints? If so, I would really appreciate any insight into interpreting the hints correctly. There are other hints about saving 5 of each item and/or combining when the 5th quest is active, so I believe these are hints are about a different trick/benefit. If I paid more attn to the order of the quests, maybe I could test this out by asking a friend for a collection that is coming up soon, combining it, and then solving puzzles until I finish the quests and combine the collection right before it. This would have to be done for a collection for which none of the quests had EVER been active. If anyone thinks it is worth testing out, let me know.
Again, I apologize if this message seems redundant, but I really want to make sure I understand (I wish there was a guidebook for this game LOL)! A big thank you for reading and responding! The people on this site are so kind to give their time and energy to help others.
Here's the FAQ excerpt - in particular, see the Valentines Update section:
"...If you already have a quest item before a quest begins it does not count towards the quest. The quest will only complete if you win the item once the quest bubble has appeared on the left hand side of your home desktop (you do not have to press accept first). The only exception to this is for players playing the Valentines Update or later version of the game. If you have already combined a collection in this version of the game, the last quest in that collection sequence, which asks you to combine the collection automatically completes without you having to combine again..."

Thanks to generous friends like Sammie and Lulu who gave me all my requested WL collection items last night and many others who gave me Gingerbread man items in the past, I was able to do some testing:
Test 1 - I had an active quest for a RULES OF THE ORDER collection item. The next quest on the unsorted list is FLATWARE, which I combined at least once in the past. I wasn’t 100% sure if I’d combined it after a quest or not, so I decided to try anyway. After my friends gifted items from the collection, I accepted the active item only from my gift list, completed the quest, accepted the next active quest item from gift list, etc. After completing the collection, nothing happened at all. I didn’t get a new quest of any kind (not for the first FLATWARE item, not anything). I think that may mean that I’d already found the FLATWARE as part of a quest series. (And, maybe FLATWARE was the first quest for a character or section of the game???)
Test 2 - I had an active quest for a VINYL RECORDS collection item. The next collection on the unsorted list is GINGERBREAD MAN, which I previously combined over 10 times to get the Gold Weight. I had NOT received the gingerbread items from quests, but from generous friends and visiting friend pictures. So, I proceeded to find all items and combine the VINYL RECORDS collection. After clicking the Collection Complete button, I immediately received a pop up message to complete the quest for the first item in the GINGERBREAD MAN collection. I clicked complete and received the pop up for the second item, etc. I quickly clicked complete for all 5 items and combined the collection; there was no need to look for any items in pictures nor to go to collections to combine the collection to trigger completion of the first quest, then again for the second, etc.
I think this is what other posters have been describing, but that I was too dense to understand. :)
I hope this makes sense and helps someone else. I plan to continue testing with collections that I haven’t combined as many times as the GINGERBREAD MAN to observe what happens when the never-before-active collection has been combined less than 5 times to confirm whether or not there is ever a disadvantage to combining early.
Answer from: Sue
Hi Mar. Yes, I experienced your Test 2 - each item and the collection just flew through my tasks (3 full sets + combines) and I just had to sit and watch. It was beautiful :-) Mine definitely happened with the 8 giftable collections that don't deplete your inventory after gifting eg party attire, legendary sets, meteor rain, etc. I hope this helps :-) Best of luck with your further testing.
