Question & Answers

World rankings. How is it worked out? (Closed)

As the title says. What criteria is used to work out where in the ranking you end up?

Bacos69, Dec 17, 2013, 4:52 AM

Answer from: Mac
Hard to tell. It definitely isn't any one measure on its own as there are people above me with fewer world cups, fewer medals, less mileage, lower win percentage, worse average world cup position and worse accumulated times on each world. Judging by the people above me in the list, it looks like a cumulative score based on all factors, although total world cup wins and %age against friends seem to have more weight than medals, distance or avg position.

Thought it was like that but as I want to improve my ranking hoped to see what I had to do. Where did you see the accumulated times on each world for other players? As I couldn't see that I thought that was what it was based on mainly? Thanks.

The times are in Game Center, assuming you've updated Boom! in the last couple of months. I understand from a 'source close to the developers' that the rankings are indeed based on a bunch of different factors, though they won't say which, and from my own experience it appears to be head-to-heads which are the biggest influence, both in terms of recent volume and recent win rate.

Thanks for the info Mac. Are you the 'Mac' who is currently No 1 in the rankings?

Challanger who recently pushed you to 4 PBs. :-)

Well hello there - isn't it 5 PBs now and you've just gone and done it again! You'll be number one soon if you keep that up! I am now a mere no. 2 in the world having lost a couple recently, plus back to work, so have to actually put the phone down occasionally! :0

Nice to chat with more space! don't think I'll manage no1. I'm also playing Olllie and he's good, up to 8 now and I think rising! At least you know you managed 1st for a while, great achievement. :-) the stats 'Russia' has seem quite intimidating (I assume he's 1 for now). Not sure if I can be bother to put myself through challenging him/her! Take care.

Answer from: * Mac *
Yes, Russia is no. 1 now. His/her stats are v. impressive. Before I upgraded to unlimited retries he/she was beating me 10:1 as well. Think it would be more of a match now though - someone else I play reckons they were beating Russia, and I'm beating them, so who knows? I don't play for the stats though: I was playing for months before stats mattered, and without any upgrades either. I also like to even things up by playing in the same outfit as my challenger, so it often takes a few rounds before I win outright. I think my current win rate is over 90% though and if you only include outright wins its probably more like 98%. You're one of only three players that I can't seem to get the better of ;)

My main characteristic is that I'm persistent! So I eventually manage to fluke a win! :-) thanks for the honesty to say I'm one of the few who's tricky for you. I was happily playing away and then they did the world ranking and I popped up as 25th and worked my way up now just by being dogged. We're else do you chat with other players then? Be curious to join and see what's being discussed. Be nice of they had ultimate ghosts from other players for the levels to play against. Take care, A.

Answer from: * Mac *
I don't know of any chat, but this is the busiest Boom-related place I've found. Ultimate ghosts would be great. Might take me a while to beat your latest. I've currently got about 50 challengers on the go.

Answer from: Bacos69
50! I have about 6! That's maybe why I can manage to beat them as I can focus on one at a time. Up to 8th WR which I'm chuffed about. Maybe I need to challenge more people to step up a little more! Also thought that they should make the wheel choice have an effect on performance so as to make it more tunable. Will try and contact the developers and suggest it. Also take your time to beat me, no rush, in fact if you wanted to play a different level that would be good too! ;-) A

Answer from: * Mac *
Well I just beat someone in a new PB on that level which was faster than yours. Can I repeat it with you? No. :) Congratulations on 8th - steady progress! To be honest, people just challenge me whenever I'm in the world cup, which is why I have so many. I guess they want to test themselves, or me, or something :-)

@Mac, you say that to be higher in the world rank I need to beat players who are higher in the world rank? So what should I do when almost nobody who is higher than me want to answer for my challenge? I think you know my stats and I really don't know why I'm only top 30 ;) What's more, several days ago I won 2 world cups, didn't play challenges and I went down in world rank from 40 to 90. Please someone find out how it's worked out :D

Posted: Jan 15, 2014, 12:48 PM

Answer from: Bacos69
It's a mystery as my stats don't look as good as most around me yet now 7th. :-)

Posted: Jan 15, 2014, 15:27 PM

Answer from: POLAND 3
And what should I say with almost 10k challenges won, avg WC position 2.7 and almost 500 WC won? And I'm moving up and down in rank from top 20 to 90 ;)

Posted: Jan 16, 2014, 2:32 AM

Answer from: * Mac *
Well there must be more to it. Perhaps if you upgraded. ;-) My guess is that it goes largely on who you're beating at the moment, and outright wins (where the other player gives up) count most.

@Mac, I have the last version of boom ;) If I hadn't upgraded, I couldn't write to you inside the game ;)

Hello from Australia!! :) Im a reasonably new player, 3 months or so.. When I first saw my world ranking i was around 20,000.. Around that time I did the upgrade and started dominating, not at the level of you guys but I have worked my way to 64.. I believe the world rankings are based primarily on recent win % against any players. I have lots of friends from when I started arent so good and lots that are at a similar level to me and it doesn't seem to matter who I play or how many I play a day.. As long as your current win % goes up you will keep moving up. 59% before upgrade.. now up to 72% and going up every few days. Doing bad in world cups drills your % while winning doesn't seem to do much.. I have about 100 friends. when i do the random challenge it throws up someone with a similar ranking.. I dont do a lot of world cups but if you guys do so my suggestion would be to challenge some lower ranked people to keep your % heathly.. and as a low ranked player there is nothing better than testing yourself against better Boomers!! Boom on people!! see you at the top one day ;) Blake

Hi Blake - I think you're right - it's recent win percentage which drives your ranking, and it doesn't seem to matter much what the ranking is of the players you're beating. World cups don't seem to make any difference either. To be a little more precise, I suspect your ranking is actually dependent almost entirely on how often/rarely you 'give up', and 'deleting' a player that you can't beat also counts as giving up.

There is virtually no movement at the top now. I lost 1st place to Russia when I gave up against someone last month and haven't been able to get it back. But I also haven't dropped at all, even though at times I haven't played for a while, because I haven't given up on any of my challenges (as Bacos69 will testify - finally won that one after a month of trying :)

Ranking is strange as up to 5th somehow as not beaten anyone for ages and just gave up on one as well. Doubt I will come back against the last one you sent me Mac but going to keep trying. Don't have as much time as I used to to spend now so will probably drop down the ranks. Seems Russia has retired if you believe that so he might well drop back soon. If not then really don't know how it's worked out!

Yes the rankings seem a little hard to change. Firestorm is probably the best player but is ranked only 12th or so. Btw, that last time of mine is a world best according to the Wiki Firestorm has set up, so good luck if and when you get the time :)
