We had the same problem and the following will sort it. go into settings on your apple device and then into the privacy menu. in there you will see a tab for the microphone. go into this and there will be an icon for the furby app. slide this to switch it on and it will all work

So I am posting my experiences on a few sites to help people out today with their Furby Boom while Hasbro's customer support people have a Christmas break, which means that we consumers get screwed with this crappy product. I tried this on 2 android tablets and 2 android smart phones and worked for 4 hours trying to get the furby to scan for my daughter. I finally figured it out.
The trick is to find ** EXACTLY ** where the microphone is on your device. There is no room for error here, folks. Once you know your microphone is (google your phone/tablet manual), then hit the scan button, make sure your furby boom hears the scan, and then place your microphone RIGHT NEXT to Furby's mouth. Furby will say some things which the app will then pick up, and you are good to go. There are a few times in the app when it tries to find out how your Furby is 'feeling' or how it is doing. This is your queue to place your tablet's microphone RIGHT NEXT to Furby's face. Then it will hear it. The problem does not seem to be in Furby's hearing. Furby can usually hear a tablet pretty good. But apparently Furby needs a sound boost because he doesn't speak loud enough for most tablets / smartphones to hear. I thought maybe the problem was that Furby couldn't hear the phone, so I tried to plug some smartphone speakers. But Hasbro found another way to mess up again, as it will immediately disable the app when it detects that 'headphones' (aka speakers) are plugged in. Anyway, that's the end of my rant, I have the Furby working, and you can too.
1. Find microphone on your tablet
2. Find speaker on your tablet
Guess which one should be closest to Furby based on what you think the app is doing.
Good luck, and Merry Christmas!

Wish some of these worked. I don't even have the settings that CRAWFY suggested! Either on my ipad or ipod. Tried my Asus tablet which runs the latest Android OS and the Furby Boom just seems to be deaf.
Answer from: idk
Why when I got on my furby app its black

I tried scan my child Furby Boom using the proper app with both my iPhone and iPad. Thousand of times what are making me upset! Even using all the hints here. The only logical thing I can think now is a hardware defect on the reception system. What is the word Furby says when it detects iPhone or iPad sync info?
Answer from: GL
If you have ipod or similar, try to use a small pin to clear any dust, or other muck from pinhole microphone next to camera. Thats what did it for us. Or if you are using IOS 7 make sure that the app is allowed to use the microphone in the privacy settings

I tried it a million times the way the directions said and it wouldn't work. Scanning with the mic right up to the mouth and the device slightly tilted upwards worked on the very first try!
