I have the same problem with my iPad. Some things that help: Obviously, be in a quiet room. Check the volume settings in both the app settings and your alarms and other sounds spot in the settings app for the phone. Put it against the device, but put something under your device to lift it a tiny bit and make sure it's a hard surface. That way you make a spot for the sound to bounce around and get bigger. Make sure the furby is quiet but not sleeping when you activate the features like toilet and food. Try putting hard walls behind the furby to bounce sound back in. I use my iPad cover and keyboard leaned together sometimes but it's messy. Lastly, move to an even quieter room perhaps the bathroom, and try holding furby in your lap with the device over his face.

The iPad has its microphone and speaker at opposite ends of the device. Oriented as the app suggests, the microphone is at the far end from the Furby. I've had good luck placing the furby to the side of the iPad. Also make sure whatever case it's in isn't muffling the mic and/or speaker.
