I have no clue about it either, but i am really annoyed by it. it wasn't in the previous version and now it is all i see when playing. it has rendered the game virtually unplayable.

Hi maureen, i sent a message to the developer chilingo and asked them the question. the reply i got was as follows:

quoted:
i've just discussed the outline with the developer, and it seems that it's a deliberate feature...but not quite what you and i first thought it was!

the card selected and highlighted in this fashion is always the first card, from left to right then top to bottom, of the matching suit that you need to play in order to "follow suit". if you lack any cards of the right suit, it'll instead default to the card in the top left of your available cards. it's not actually a hint, it's the first card which can be played. often, if you're down to one legal card in a suit that may be played, the outline will duplicate the hint because it's the only card that can be played - co-incidence, but easy to confuse.

if you choose to ask for a hint, that outline is moved to the hinted card as an extra aid to supplement the "bounce".

apparently this functionality was also present in the previous version of the game (which predates my time here so i didn't know about that aspect), but hopefully that helps explain it now that i know it's deliberate (albeit a little less than perfectly clear, something i'll try and tweak when we next update the game).

hope that helps
