Sicily low ground, no way to win

Ive been stuck on this same thing for a while now and i'm convinced there is no way to get through this.
every time i start this their is a different scenario, i go down the first step and make it to the green light at the first crate. i fire to my left at the guys shooting me from the far side of the bridge. i take them all out. then if i progress further to the end of the bridge it's ghost town unless i go under the bridge and up the stairs, then i take out the mg and all of a sudden i have germans appearing out of thin air and eventually they overwhelm me.

now if i start the game out by proceeding to the first green light ( crate) , take out the guys on my left then walk forward a couple of crates, then walk backwards to starting position germans and the second green light further down the bridge appear, as well as snipers on the top of the bridge. i kill all of the guys on my level of the bridge as well as the ones coming down the stairs and the snipers on top and i still manage to die for no reason.

i'm on ipad2 is anybody else having this same issue? maybe it's because i haven't bought anything yet. i earned all of my dog tags and rank of second lt. and have all the weapons and armor you can have without buying medals. i'm just getting sick of being stuck in the same place, with no apparent solution. especially since i seem to have to go backwards just to get the game to progress forward.
