If you add allies, they get to use a number of your best units in combat....Can they lose your units in the battle just as you lose them if you go up against another player who is much stronger?

Yes. If you are a level 10 you can have up to 200 units brought to battle, that is assuming you have 50 allies as each can bring 4. Each unit can be lost. Usually at that level you will lose 1 on average.
