Keep your population high. in the beginning of a game do not output so many units- instead use individual cheap units as scouts to claim neutral territory as quickly as possible. Make a small unit attached to a hero with a number of special units. Upgraded units may cost more gold but you will need less of them, therefore, you will keep your food and population high enough to continue producing gold for you. Buy population by the tens from your tavern to keep your population high, do not immigrate your villagers to your cities unless they are in danger of being captured or you have recently captured an enemy village that you can't defend for long. In the long run, upgrades and more expensive units will save you money as population is your sole provider of funding besides interest from strongholds and exchange from trading posts. Good Gaming to you Zarri!
