I noticed that each "Choose your path" attack has two levels (indicated by 2 gems). To get the first level I just buy the upgrade in the game using coins. How do I upgrade the attacks to the second level?

I think i know what you're talking about, when you go to the character stats page and you see that there are 2 gems for each attack, they represent which path you chose, the first gem represents path 1 ad the second gem represents path 2, it's a shame, but you cannot obtain both paths unless you gameshark or some other form of cheating. but to answer your question, you cannot get both gems.
