Defeat Hodge

I have just started playing X-Men Destiny today, and I am currently trying to battle Hodge for the first time. I have noticed that you have to battle him again, but how do I battle him again, if I can never win the first time?? Please, help me figure out how to defeat Hodge for the first time. (just hitting and dodging will not work for me, since I do not see a shield whenever battling him)
