Can't move big key in blot alley

I'm in Blot Alley and I'm supposed to press A to drag a big key over to the locked door. But when I press A all I do is jump. I made myself seasick running around in circles, pressing A, and jumping. Is there a certain place where you need to stand so that you don't jump but pull the key instead?
