Working the maching guns

I recently was given this game and cannot work the machine guns. I have the remote on control scheme 1 (default). It states to use the number 2 button for the machine guns but they will not work. I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

The number 2 button is for bombs and the number 1 is for your machine guns!
