What is the crown for when it shows it in the area that shows how many stars and comet coins you have collected

It shows which rank you are on.
silver crown: collected all power stars and comets
golden crown: collected all green stars (green star challenge completed + rosalina icon unlocked)
platinum crown: perfect run + game completed (master of galaxies) all 242 stars
your question is now answered.

Not always, Lance. I got a silver crown by completing Honeybloom Galaxy. To get it, first you have to go to the second pair of ladders. Second, you have to wall jump. Last, viola you have a star.
