In the 3rd portal I encountered a passages way that a bunch of thorns rapidly sprout up how do I gets passed the thorns without getting killed?

Wait until the thorns go down . They are timed. Be quick and run through when the are own. There is enough time to do it.

If you are in the underground world I found I could use the B button power up to get through. Later in that level they are timed for running through.
