I've used the blade to move the puzzles on the door twice and it looks like they need one more hit, but i've hit them in every different direction several times and nothings happened. am i missing something?

You have to swing your sword in each direction that the 'Red Line' faces on each side. I think it was five or six times per side as the pieces slide up. Then the line will appear down the middle of the door. One slash down will open it then.
