After you have used it to get past the door in the dungeon as its needed, you go to the riverwood trader in Riverwood and talk to the man running the shop. Talk about everything possible and he should say that thieves took a golden dragon claw. If you return it, you can marry his sister and you can also take the claw back to keep or sell.
