Reviews Capcom Vs. SNK 2 EO Reviews for Xbox
User ReviewsCapcom vs. SNK 2 is another distinctly SNK game. This isn't a good thing. These days fighting games are one of the few genres that still make ridiculously hard games. Some of these games are very good, such as Tekken 5 and Virtua Fighter 5. Others don't hold up so well and end up requiring you to be a god of the button to even play casually, such as Soul Calibur 3 and anything made by SNK. SNK is notorious for their ungodly hard final bosses who will wipe the floor with you, even if you beat the crud out of all opposition on your way there. Well I guess they figured that they couldn't pass on an opportunity to make another game of that ilk. The story of this game is pretty threadbare, which is pretty much what is to be expected with these crossover games. Basically it seems to amount to Robert Garcia from Art of Fighting and Ken Masters of Street Fighter fame have united their money to make a huge fighting tournament that all will compete in. As this is going on Rugal, a KoF boss, and Akuma, who I hope you all know by now, are seeking each other out. They each seek to steal the others power and become the most powerful warrior in the world. But we don't really care about that, we want to make teams consisting of Street Fighter guys teaming up with and going against the King of Fighter's cast. On the plus side, you get characters from a variety of Capcom games, not just Street Fighter and Darkstalkers. However, the cast really isn't anything all to special, especially since there are some serious problems with character balance and how dated some of the characters look. I'll address that more below. Other than the numerous characters to choose from, you can also customize your game experience further. You can make custom alternate outfits for your characters in one mode and you can make custom grooves. These grooves will be familiar to anyone who played the latest entries in the Street Fighter series. Basically, by choosing your groove you change how your character builds up his super meter, how you need to do your supers and what other special abilites you have, like rolling around to dodge attacks or the ability to do counter attacks. Regardless of all of this there are some really bad balance issues that should have been addressed. Some characters are so significantly more powerful than others that it is almost a joke. Many of the SNK characters are incredibly powerful and far more able to do some serious control of their enemies. That is not to say that the Capcom characters are useless, but those that aren't incredibly cheesy are very hard to use in comparison to their SNK equivalents. This is a serious issue that I don't know why they didn't address it far more than they have. Character balance is integral in fighting games and that is seriously lacking here. The other thing I don't understand is the incredibly lame way that the character models were simply cut and pasted into this game. They all look like they came from their respective games, complete with incredibly poor graphics for the Darkstalkers characters. The backgrounds look really great, but that really doesn't matter much when the character models are the thing that you will be watching the most. So this really falls flat on its face. The same goes for the audio I suppose. All of the tunes and character sounds seem to have been directly ripped from previous games. I suppose that SNK used this to keep costs low on this game and it is kind of sad really. The production value of this game isn't even half of what it was like for the Marvel vs. Capcom series and it is a real shame. Those are my favorite games and I had high hopes for this one. Even if you can get over the sub-standard graphics and seriously imbalanced characters this has all the typical flaws of an SNK game. The game sometimes has some seriously shoddy collision detection and to say nothing of SNK boss syndrome. To any who don't know what this is, this is when the final bosses of the game are so super powerful that they can kill you in one or two hits, and even these hits are near impossible to dodge. The secret bosses, Ultimate Rugal and Shin-Akuma are so ridiculous to fight that I almost threw a controller for the first time in over a decade. That says something for this game and I never want to play it again. Controlling the characters feels remarkably similar if you have ever played in any of the previous SNK or Capcom games. The only thing that requires some adaptation are the Grooves. These are the exact same character models we have been looking at for roughly the last ten years. Give us an update! A mix between the older SNK and Capcom tunes with some newer types of music mixed in. However nothing really stands out. After you have unlocked all the characters and modes there is little reason to turn it on again. However many will likely never bother with this due to how repetitive the game feels. If you are looking for a King of Fighters type game, buy this cheap. Otherwise give it a pass. Reviewed by: misfit119 | Views: 19 Capcom Vs. SNK 2 EO Xbox Items
