Change your gama to 100 percent. You will not really need torches anymore.

Coal is a stone block with black chunks in it. usually its close to the surface on down, so find a cave and search there. If you cant find anything, I suggest putting your difficulty on Peaceful so you can easily search far without having to run back home to protect yourself. Then, cut as many trees as you can, don't forget to plant them back. Burn the plain wood after making some sticks, and youll get charcoal. Use that and the sticks to make torches, and then look for more coal. :) Also try putting your gamma level on 100 percent, it will help not only in caves, but at night as well.

To find coal u must first try to find a mountain. Normally u would find this block that looks like stone but has little black dots or cracks in it, and that would be coal. It almost looks like stone when you break it.This doesn't necessarily mean that you can't find coal by digging deep, because u can. BUT I just find it easier to get coal by getting it from a mountain. Also, u can only get coal / obtain it by using a pickaxe to get it

First get two wood logs then put one in a furnace as fuel and the other as theingredient then it will make charcoal. Keep making it then get wood and make charcoal torches. You can use them to light up your mines

Dig through tall hills. First you'll see dirt. Second you'll see stone. Third you'll see some other kind of blocks. Finally you'll see coal. Hope I helped. Hey could you tell me how to get diamonds when there's bedrocks in the way?

There's a few ways to get the torches to see, assuming that's what you want, first you can easly obtain coal by going up to a steep tall mountain covered in stone on the side. Look at the side of the mountain (usually vertically flat) and you'll normally find coal hangin up there. Just jump build upward with dirt to get to it. Second is to obviously go in a cave with high gamma or dig to a cave. Third is to simply randomly mine for it underground. Fourth isn't coal but last longer in furnace and can still be used for torches. It's charcoal, made by burning normal wood in a furnace as a ingredient. Hope this helps :)
